SMART COMMUNICATION
A research project on mobile device use in social interaction
“There is order at all points.”
H. Sacks
(“Notes on Methodology”, 1984)
Although smartphones and other mobile devices have become an integral part of our everyday life, public and scientific discourses still like to emphasise their possible negative effects on health or communication behaviour. The Smart Communication project offers to approach everyday technology use through the lens of interactional and linguistic research, focusing on its ubiquity and observable everyday uses. Its team members wish to understand technology use as an integral part of routine and orderly social practices, rather than as a threat to communication and cooperative action. This research project is funded by the Academy of Finland and the Eudaimonia Institute of the University of Oulu.
